Why Experiential Therapy (Like Parts Work) Can Help You Finally Move Forward | Vancouver Therapist
Experiential therapy helps you move beyond overthinking and heal emotional patterns at the root. Learn how parts work supports lasting change.
Experiential therapy can feel a bit unfamiliar at first.
You might be used to approaches that focus on changing your thoughts, learning coping tools, or trying to “fix” certain patterns. And while those can be helpful, they don’t always get to the root of why you feel stuck.
As a Vancouver therapist, I often work with people who understand their patterns logically… but still feel like something isn’t shifting.
That’s where experiential approaches, like parts work, can make a real difference.
🌿 What Is Experiential Therapy?
Experiential therapy focuses less on just talking about your experiences, and more on connecting with them in the present moment.
This might look like:
noticing what’s happening in your body
exploring emotions as they arise
working with different “parts” of yourself
Rather than analyzing from a distance, we begin to experience what’s happening internally in a safe, supported way.
🌿 My Honest Take on Parts Work
I’ll be honest — I didn’t always resonate with the idea of “parts.”
At one point, it felt a bit strange. Maybe even a little fluffy.
But through my own therapy, and through working with clients, that perspective really shifted.
I started to see how powerful it is to understand yourself not as “one thing that needs fixing,” but as a system of different parts — all trying, in their own way, to help you.
🌿 Why We Get Stuck (And Why It’s Not a Personal Failure)
So many people come into therapy feeling like something is wrong with them.
Like:
Why do I keep doing this?
Why can’t I just change?
Why do I know better, but still feel stuck?
We’re often taught that if we just had the right tools, more discipline, or more insight… we could finally become who we’re “supposed” to be.
But experiential therapy offers a different lens.
It suggests that the parts of you that feel stuck aren’t broken — they’re protective.
🌿 Understanding Parts Work (In a Grounded Way)
Parts work is based on the idea that different parts of you developed for a reason.
Often, these parts formed in response to earlier experiences where something felt overwhelming, unsupported, or unsafe.
Instead of being integrated, they learned to:
protect
manage
avoid
control
And they’ve likely been doing that job for a long time.
From this perspective, your patterns aren’t random — they make sense.
🌿 Why Self-Compassion Changes Everything
This is where parts work becomes really powerful.
Instead of trying to push away the parts of you that feel inconvenient, reactive, or overwhelming…
We begin to approach them with curiosity.
Because when we shame these parts, they don’t disappear — they get louder, more reactive, or more entrenched.
But when we start to understand them?
That’s where change begins.
🌿 Healing Isn’t About Fixing Yourself
One of the biggest shifts in experiential therapy is this:
You are not something that needs to be fixed.
What often needs attention are the parts of you that didn’t get what they needed earlier in life.
When we can:
connect with those parts
understand their role
offer them the support they didn’t receive
We begin to create internal harmony.
🌿 What This Looks Like in Therapy
In our work together, we might:
identify different parts of you (e.g. anxious part, avoidant part, inner critic)
understand what each part is trying to do
build a sense of internal safety
create a kind of “internal support system”
Over time, this helps shift you out of feeling stuck — not by forcing change, but by creating the conditions for it.
🌿 Why Experiential Therapy Can Be So Effective
Experiential approaches go deeper than insight alone.
They help you:
feel, not just think
process, not just understand
shift patterns at their root
This is often why people say:
“I’ve talked about this for years… but this feels different.”
🌿 A Softer Way Forward
There is nothing inherently wrong with you.
The parts of you that feel like “roadblocks” are often the same parts that helped you survive.
And when we stop fighting them, and start working with them…
Things begin to shift.

🌿 FAQs
What is parts work in therapy?
Parts work is an approach that understands the mind as made up of different parts, each with its own role, often shaped by past experiences.
Is experiential therapy better than CBT?
Not necessarily better, but different. Experiential therapy focuses on emotional processing and deeper change, rather than just thoughts and behaviours.
Why do I feel stuck even when I understand my problems?
Insight alone doesn’t always lead to change. Experiential therapy helps process emotions and patterns at a deeper level.
